2004 Visual Art Competition Winners

Napa Valley, CA ~ ANNOUNCING WINNERS OF THE 11TH ANNUAL NAPA VALLEY MUSTARD FESTIVAL VISUAL ART COMPETITION ~ EXHIBITION & SILENT AUCTION TO DEBUT AT MUSTARD MAGIC ON JANUARY 31

The winners of the Napa Valley Mustard Festival 11th Annual Visual Art Competition were recently selected by a jury consisting of three esteemed members of the Northern California arts community.

Gay Dawson, Director of Visual Arts for Luther Burbank Center, Santa Rosa; Richard Reisman, former Curator of the di Rosa Preserve, Napa; and Judith Selby, a Marin artist whose work combines traditional watercolor techniques with experiments in new-genre and image/text installations, juried 58 entries into the exhibit, choosing the winners from 216 entries.

The winning pieces and juried entries will be unveiled in the Visual Art Competition Exhibit and Silent Auction at Mustard Magic, the Napa Valley Mustard Festival's grand opening event magnifique on Saturday, January 31, at 7 p.m. The Visual Art Competition Exhibit then moves to Kirkland Ranch Winery in Napa, where it will be open to the public from February 3 through April 2. An Artists' Reception honoring winning artists will be held at Kirkland Ranch Winery on Sunday, February 8, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Winning artists will receive cash prizes totaling $3,500 and complimentary tickets to Mustard Magic. Winning entries in Two Dimensional and Three Dimensional categories:

The Culinary Institute of America, the magnificent stone building that was once home to Christian Brothers Winery, sets the stage for Mustard Magic - Napa Valley's most artistic and extravagant gathering of the year. Host Chef Michael Reardon, Executive Chef, Tra Vigne; Host Winemaker Ludovic Dervin, Winemaker, Mumm Napa, and Host Artist Ira Yeager - creator of the 2004 poster Le sommelier de la moutarde - will be present to welcome guests to an opulent evening of magic, music, and surprises.

Enjoy sumptuous offerings of food and wine presented by Napa Valley chefs and winemakers as you stroll through the Art Exhibit and Silent Auction. Take a turn on the Barrel Room dance floor to Cajun music by Tee Fee. Step across Monet's famed green bridge as ballerinas unfold like water lilies to dance on the mezzanine. Tap your toes to traditional French music along with members of Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party.

Savor marvelous morsels throughout the event, and save room for the gourmet buffet presented by Culinary Institute of America chefs in the famed teaching kitchen on the third floor. Just across the landing and around the staircase where trapeze artists perform in mid-air, you'll discover the soir•e's Live and Silent Auctions, set amid the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles. This 'event within the event' attracts bidders who compete to win exotic trips, unusual Wine Country adventures and getaways, winemaker dinners, wine lots, art, and more. Attend the auction - first-come, first-served for tables centered in front of the stage - and enjoy the finest wines in the house as you raise your paddle to win the bid.

Admission to Mustard Magic is $125 in advance through January 31 and $150 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased in Yountville at Antique Fair; in St. Helena at Art on Main and The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone; and at Embassy Suites(r) Napa Valley and Napa Convention & Visitors Bureau in Napa.
