NEWS Napa Valley, CA ~ As the Napa Valley Mustard Festival approaches its Signature Event weekend , March 17 through 19, the Festival continues to gain momentum. Mustard Magic ~ Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler! ~ launched the Festival at the Culinary Institute of America on January 28 with even more pizzazz than customary: Ralph Brennan of the famed New Orleans Brennan family of restaurateurs and president of Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group attended as Honorary Chair. The Mustard Magic Auction raised funding for American Red Cross Katrina relief programs through a dinner for 50 contributed by Elizabeth and Clarke Swanson of Swanson Vineyards, and approximately $5,000 for the New Orleans Musician's relief fund. There are eight seats still available for the dinner, to be catered by Galatoirs of New Orleans, at $500 per seat. When the final seats are sold the contribution to the American Red Cross will total $25,000. The Festival has welcomed American Express as Presenting Sponsor and the Official Card of the Napa Valley Mustard Festival. St. Supéry hosted an elegant reception on Saturday evening, February 4, during A Weekend of Fine Art, for artists and the public. Visitors will be able to view and purchase works through April 3. The community of St. Helena enjoyed one of the most beautiful sunny days of the season during Savor St. Helena on February 11. Guests indulged in seven sumptuous courses at Grand Dîner à l'Auberge du Soleil on February 17 at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford. The season's gourmet extravaganza featured dishes by Host Chef Robert Curry; Paul Lemieux, Executive Pastry Chef, Auberge du Soleil; Thomas Keller, Owner/Executive Chef, The French Laundry; Ken Frank, Owner/Executive Chef, La Toque; and Richard Reddington, Partner/Executive Chef, Redd. Wines from Beaulieu Vineyard, Cakebread, Frogs Leap Paraduxx, Trefethan, and Schramsberg were paired with courses, and the result was one of the most memorable meals of her lifetime, reports Napa Valley Mustard Festival President Louise Packard. On Signature Event weekend, guests will don their finest black tie attire for The Awards ~ A Tasty Competition! ~ to be held at Lincoln Theater on the historic grounds of the California Veterans Home in Yountville, Friday evening, March 17 at 7 p.m. Food, wine, and music will be the stars of this elegant affair. A first time EVER concert featuring multi-Grammy Award and Emmy Award winning producer, composer, and artist, Narada Michael Walden, will precede the presentation of World-Wide Mustard Competition awards to mustard makers from around the world. The Competition has more than 350 entries, the most ever, and is a resounding success, according Barry Levenson of the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, coordinator of the judging. Guests will then sample original mustard recipes by notable Napa Valley Chefs competing for Napa Valley Mustard Festival Chef of the Year titles, place their votes for Napa Valley Mustard Festival People's Choice chef of the Year, while tasting some of the best wines in the world. Tickets are $100 in advance; $150 at the door. At The Marketplace ~ A Signature Event for Connoisseurs ~ on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - guests will celebrate the mustard season and taste mustards from around the world at COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts in Napa. Highlights of this rain or shine food, wine and arts festival include celebrity chef cooking demonstrations presented by Viking Range, a KGO/Newstalk 810 live remote broadcast of Dining Around with Gene Burns, a Sunset Magazine pavilion, and a VIP room for American Express Caremembers. Artful activities include fine arts and crafts presented by juried artists and artisans; hands art projects for children presented by the Arts Council of Napa Valley; live performances including jazz by New Orleans musicians Kim Prevost and Bill Soley. Renowned harmonica player Norton Buffalo will perform on Sunday afternoon. Adult admission to The Marketplace at $30 in advance; $35 at the door, includes 8 food and 5 wine tasting tickets (value $1 each), plus a souvenir wine glass. Student admission, ages 13 to 20, at $10 includes 5 food-tasting tickets. Admission for children ages 6 to 12 is $5. Children under the age of 6 are admitted for free. Adult tickets are available in advance at participating Raley's and Nob Hill Foods, which include a voucher for 5 additional tasting tickets. An array of community and non-profit events, further enrich the Mustard Season calendar. Mustard, Mud, & Music ~ A Calistoga Jazz Festival will be held on Saturday, March 11 in downtown Calistoga; Mustard Season Silver Pass Weekend presented by the Silverado Trails Wineries Association on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12; the Volunteer Center of Napa Valley's Masquerade Ball on Saturday, March 18, at V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena; and A Taste of Yountville on Saturday, March 25 in downtown Yountville. Guests will view the season's beauty captured by photographers from far and wide at The Mumm Napa Photo Finish, the inevitably "sold out" and wildly exuberant Napa Valley Mustard Festival Grand Finale Event, at Mumm Napa in Rutherford on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. Napa Valley wineries will present a heady array of wines, and Napa Valley restaurants will serve sweets and savories. Music will be featured throughout the winery, with dancing to the unique Cajan rhythms of Andre Theirry and Zydago Magic, which incorporates rhythm, blues, and rock and roll. Photographs will be available for purchase, through May 4. Tickets are $85 in advance; $100 at the door.
