The Awards ~ A Spicy Soirée! ~ launched the fifteenth annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival's Signature Event Weekend on Friday , March 14 at Black Stallion Winery in Napa. Barry Levenson, Curator of the Mt. Horeb Mustard Museum in Mr. Horeb, Wisconsin presented Napa Valley Mustard Festival World Wide Mustard Competition awards and Napa Valley Chefs competed for Chef of the Year titles. As guests tasted and prepared to vote for their favorite mustard-inspired dishes, judges working behind closed doors in a blind tasting chose Chef Andrew A. Arndt as Critic's Choice Chef of the Year. Chef Arndt is the Executive Chef of Elaine Bell Catering, Napa. His original award-winning recipe was Smoked Pork Shoulder with Citrus Mustard with Parker House Rolls. Gene Burns of KGO Newstalk AM 810's Dining Around with Gene Burns, Karola Saekel Craib, freelance food editor who contributes largely to the San Francisco Chronicle, and Margo True, Executive Food Editor, Sunset Magazine served on the critic's team. 2008 NVMF People's Choice Chef of the Year
Festival sponsors and guests reaped rewards as they tasted original mustard-inspired dishes presented by the competing chefs. Toward evening's end, ballots for the People's Choice Chef of the Year Award were counted and Executive Chef Peter Pahk of Silverado Resort was elected by event patrons. Chef Pahk presented Muscovy Duck with Organic Green Apple Glace & Chinese Mustard Cabbage. Chef Pahk was also selected as "People's Choice Chef of the Year" in 2005, and tied for both the Critic's and People's Choice Awards in 2007. Coordinated by Barry Levenson, Curator of the Mt. Horeb Mustard Museum in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, and Mustard Festival producer, Summers-McCann Public Relations, the 2008 World Wide Mustard Competition had more than 400 mustards from seven countries. Entries from Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, South Africe, Sweden, and the U.S., were judged in 19 categories by food journalists and chefs as part of the Fifteenth Annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival. Representatives from throughout the United States and around the world attended The Awards ~ A Spicy Soirée! to receive their medals. Silver Spring Deli Style was named The Grand Champion Mustard of the 2008 World Wide Mustard Competition.
