DOUBLE TIES IN NAPA VALLEY MUSTARD FESTIVAL CHEFS COMPETITON ~ UNPRECEDENTED AWARDS

Napa Valley, CA ~ Unprecedented ties in both Napa Valley Mustard Festival Critic’s Choice and People’s Choice Chef of the Year Competitions aroused cheers from an enthusiastic audience at The Awards ~ A Tasty Competition ~ held on Friday, March 17 at Lincoln Theater in Yountville, California.

As guests tasted and prepared to vote for their favorite mustard inspired dishes, Gene Burns of KGO Newstalk AM810’s Dining Around with Gene Burns, Karola Saekel of the San Francisco Chronicle, and Molly Watson of Sunset Magazine, working behind closed doors in a blind tasting, came up with identical points for Executive Chef Peter Pahk of Silverado Resort and Executive Chef Maynard Oestreich of Rings Steak, Seafood and Chops for the Critic’s Choice Award.

Chef Pahk presented Kalbi Beef and Grilled Scallion Roll with a Symphony of Mustards; Chef Oestreich presented Mustard Cured Gravlox on Yukon Potato Pancake & Caraway Crème Fraiche.

Festival sponsors and guests also reaped rewards as they tasted original mustard inspired dishes presented by competing chefs. “The food was exceptional,” said Festival President Louse Packard. “The chefs out-did themselves. Lincoln Theater provided a wonderful setting. A personal feel in an elegant setting with wonderful food, wine, and music, plus a fantastic audience, made it our best event ever.”

Toward evening’s end, ballots for the People’s Choice Award were counted and once again, Chef Pahk’s recipe prevailed, receiving identical votes with Executive Chef Vincent Nattress of Meadowood Resort. Chef Nattress presented Maple and Dijon Pulled Pork Sandwich, with Celery Root & Whole Grain Mustard Slaw. Chef Pahk was also elected "People's Choice Chef of the Year" in 2005.

The black-tie red-carpet gala also honored mustard makers from around the world. The theater provided the perfect venue for the awards presentation, according to Packard, as well as a fabulous concert by, multi-Grammy Award and Emmy Award winning producer, composer, and artist Narada Michael Walden.

Dulcet Cuisine Madras Curry Mustard from Lake Oswego, Oregon was named The Grand Champion Mustard of the Napa Valley Mustard Festival World Wide Mustard Competition. More than 350 mustards from destinations as far away as Japan, France, and Poland, and as close as Napa Valley, were judged in 15 categories by food journalists and chefs. A panel of judges headed by Barry Levenson of the Mt. Horeb Mustard Museum in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, coordinated the judging, which took place during the month of February. Levenson attended to present the awards. Many of the winners personally attended to receive their medals and showcase their products at The Marketplace, The Festival’s Signature Event, held at COPIA ~ The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts on March 17 and 18.

“Overall, the 13th Annual Napa Valley Mustard Festival has been the most successful season of events in our history,” emphasized Festival Producer Pat Summers of Summers-McCann Public Relations. “We added a new fundraising element this year and have raised Hurricane Katrina Relief funding totaling approximately $40,000. We attribute much of our success to the support of American Express, presenting sponsor and Official Card of the Napa Valley Mustard Festival.”

The partnership has given the Festival new energy and increased visibility, as well as funding, according to Summers. Programs, websites and brochures have featured special value added Napa Valley Mustard Festival offers for American Express Cardmembers. “Numerous merchants have seen a significant response,” she said. “Each year the Mustard Season draws a large number of visitors during this time of year which was once considered the off-season. The addition of special lodging and dining opportunities has made the season even more attractive to travelers.”
